Path Ahead 2017
The 5th Annual Path Ahead commenced on Tuesday, 10th October 2017 with a Panel discussion on ‘Finding One’s Path…’. The panel discussion provided an opportunity to our students of Classes IX – XII to interact with young professionals from the fields of textile designing, film-making, sports journalism and health services. The panellists shared from their personal and professional experiences regarding identifying interests and mapping them with career possibilities
Path Ahead: University Representation was organised for students of Classes IX-XII and their parents on 12th and 13th October 2017.
On Thursday, 12th October invited organisations shared about the scope of higher education in different countries, admission requirements and application process:

- IDP Education ( for United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand )
On Friday, 13th October students of Classes IX to XII and their parents got an opportunity to interact with the representatives of the invited Colleges/ Universities. Representatives from higher education institutes from India and abroad had set up information desks in, Senior School from 10:00am to 1:00pm. CUAC desk was set up for Canada specific application information and IDP desks took queries related to USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. The following organisations attended the event:

The school reopened after summer on 5th July 2017 to a burst of literary activities.
Shikshantar Annual Intra School Debate-2017
The Shikshantar Annual Intra-School Debate is now an integral part of the school calendar and is eagerly awaited by the students of Senior School. Considering the large number of participants this time, the debate took place in three batches with two pools debating simultaneouly at two different venues. The topics of the debate are chosen with care and sensitivity, keeping in mind the level and interest of the students as well as the relevance of certain topics vis-e-vis the current affairs.
The debate for Class XI and XII took place on Tuesday, 11th July 2017. The debate was moderated by Samridha Bhaiya. The topics for the debate were as follows:
- Wars are inevitable for peace
- Common man is as responsible for corruption as the political class
- Board examinations are a necessary step in preparation for life
The debate for Class IX took place on Wednesday, 12th July 2017. The topics were:
- Competition is necessary in pursuit of excellence
- School uniforms have no bearing on the learning environment
- Reality shows are no place for children
The debate for Class X also took place on Wednesday, 12th July 2017. The topics were:
- A corruption free society is an elusive dream
- Religion is a personal matter and not an issue for national debate
- Capital punishment should be abolished

Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-School Debate-2017
The students’ experience in the Intra-School Debate paved way for their participation in the Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-School Debate-2017, organised every year by CISCE in two categories. Being in the extempore format, the topic for the Frank Anthony Debate is announced an hour before the commencement of the debate.
Syona Mehra (Jord) and Ramanika Roy (Jord) represented the school in the Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-School Debate-2017 for Category II (IX-X), held this year at St. Xavier’s High School, Panchkula on 17th July 2017. The topic was: E-Books are here to stay. Syona Mehra was adjudged the runner up to the best speaker in the event.
Yash Raj Mehran (Hadyn) and Sparsh Sinha (Ignis) represented the school in the Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-School Debate-2017 for Category I (XI-XII), held at Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana on 17th July 2017. The topic was: Print Media is losing out.
Albert Barrow Memorial All-India Inter-School Creative Writing Competition- 2017
In the month of July, our students also participated in the Albert Barrow Memorial All-India Inter-School Creative Writing Competition- 2017, organised by CISCE every year. This year, the competition was held in St. Francis College, Lucknow for Category I and St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh for Category II. Manu Batra (Vyom) and Ramanuj Goel (Jord) represented the school in Category I and II respectively. The topics for the Creative Writing Competition (announced at the venue) were as follows:
- My bank in my smart phone
- A brave new digital world
- Write a short story entitled: “How I met my soulmate through data sharing”
- India is heading towards a corruption free society
Shikshantar also hosted the Albert Barrow Memorial Creative Writing Competition for 2017 for Pool C1. Accordingly, the following schools participated in the event in Shikshantar:

Shikshantar Annual Hindi Debate-2017
Shikshantar Annual Hindi Debate-2017 was organised on 26th and 27th July 2017 for Classes IX to XII. The topics for the first round of the debate were:
- शिक्षा व रोज़गार की उन्नति में आरक्षण सहायक है।
- नोटबंदी भ्र्ष्टाचार को रोकने का उपयुक्त साधन है।
The final round was held on 27th July 2017, on the topic: इलेक्ट्रॉनिक गैजेट्स दिन व दिन हमारी क्रियाशीलता को कम कर रहे हैं।

Interactive Session with Arthur Binard, an eminent author, (25th April 2017)
An interactive session with the American poet Mr. Arthur Binard was organised for the students of Class VIII to XII, in collaboration with The Japan Foundation. The event began with dramatic reading of the book Main Dhoondh Raha Hoon, originally written in Japanese by Mr. Arthur Binard and published by Eklavya, supported by The Japan Foundation. The book, a deeply evocative reflection on the tragedy of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with photographs of some of the surreal items of the tragedy, was read-aloud by Ms. Tomoko who has also translated the book into Hindi.
After the reading session by Ms. Tomoko, Mr. Binard spoke about his journey from being an ordinary teenager in Michigan, USA to moving to Japan to learn Japanese at the age of twenty two. His discourse about how the bombing of Hiroshima was projected by the media and justified by the government was particularly meaningful in the current context of post-truths and alternative facts. The students heard an old story- of the atomic bombing- from a new perspective- that of an empathetic American citizen, presenting the Japanese side of the story.
Open House Interaction for Class X, (22nd April 2017)
The First Open House Interaction for Class X was held on Saturday, 22nd April, 2017. The session was attended by students and their parents. Group work followed by large group discussion aimed at bringing about an understanding of the key challenges faced by students of Class X. Candid discussions helped in understanding each other’s perspective. The highlight of the session was the maturity and balance with which the students expressed their thoughts.
Open House Interaction for Class XII, (22nd April 2017)
The First Open House Interaction for Class XII was held on Saturday, 22nd April, 2017. The session attended by students and their parents focussed on preparation for board examination and the path ahead. The group work aimed at bringing an understanding of the factors contributing to the process of preparation and how parents can support the process.
The group work was followed by a presentation to understand the stages and procedures involved in the university application process. Pertinent information was shared with the students and parents along with timelines so that they could plan the application process at their end.
8th shik’MUN, (20th-21st April 2017)
The eighth edition of Shikshantar Model United Nations took place on 20th and 21st of April, 2017 for the students of Classes IX to XII. The Executive Board and the Organising Committee comprised students of Classes XI and XII.
The UN General Assembly put their heads together to discuss their agenda, the Syrian Crisis. This committee was chaired by Saumya Agrawal as the Chairperson, Ritvik Varghese as Vice-Chair and Manu Batra as the Rapporteur. The committee discussed all possible causes behind the Syrian Crisis.
The UN Security Council this time had a discussion on the South China Sea Conflict. The Security Council was chaired by Siddhart Maheshwari and DwayLunkad as Co- Chairpersons with Sanaya Dutt as the Vice-Chair. The sessions consisted of intense discussions and the Secretary General, Yash Raj Mehran, participated as China to raise the level of debate. Several countries such as USA and India took a stand against China in this debate.
The Indian Cabinet, with the agenda of the Surgical Strike on Pakistan, was chaired by Nandini Goel as the Prime Minister, Sparsh Sinha as the Chief Secretary Adviser and Tejas Vohra as the Principal Secretary. The committee involved deliberations on the Uri attack and how to execute a successful counter attack.
Along with that the International Press headed by Nivedita Gautam published the proceedings of the two days in the newsletter The Daily Caucus.

Interaction with Tanvie Hans, a passionate footballer, (12th April 2017)
The whistle blows, the match begins. The girls are running across the field, chasing the ball, the spectators cheering wildly, roaring their approval, the commentator yelling riotously on the top of his lungs. They tear down the field frantically, pass, receive, feint and tackle, shoot, dive and save. The ball is zipping across the field, back and forth, like a hysterical bullet, erasing any lingering doubt in anyone’s mind that girls can’t play just as well as boys, wrote Zoenna Upadhyay describing the first ever Girls’ football match held on the Sports Day on 22nd November 2014.
The Girls’ Football Team of Shikshantar has come a long way since. In 2015 girls of classes VIII, IX and X came together due to their common passion for the game of football and formed a girls’ football team in the school. The team went on to perform well at the District level and one of them was selected to be a member of the Haryana state under-17 football team at the national school games held at Andaman Nicobar Islands by the School Games Federation of India in the month of November, 2015. Currently our school girls are participating in both U-19 and U-17 categories.
With this context, when the opportunity of inviting Tanvie Hans presented itself, it was grabbed readily by the school. Tanvie is an avid footballer, originally from Delhi, currently playing for Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies FC in London. Tanvie came to Shikshantar on 12th April 2017 at 11:00 am for a 45 minutes interaction with students. After sharing her incredible journey in the world of football, she took in questions from the students. The children had questions about her experience of playing in the UK, about the differences she has observed in the approaches of the players in India and abroad and about how she balanced her studies with sports.
Our football players also got some exclusive time with her both on the field! While the interaction off the field was inspiring for all, the game on the field was invigorating and drew out the passion for sports in everyone!
Campus Bird Count (18th February 2017)
The Campus Bird Count is a sub-event of the larger Great Backyard Bird Count. It is a coordinated effort to document the birdlife in multiple campuses across India.
A team from Shikshantar participated in the Campus bird count event this year, an initiative taken by the Science Committee of the Student Council. The procedure is to identify and count all species detected in every 15 minutes of the walk in a particular location. The checklists of the entire duration of the walk is uploaded for every 15 minutes on ‘eBird’ which is an online checklist program, launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. eBird provides information on bird abundance and distribution.
Birding enthusiasts from Classes IX and XI gathered at the school on Saturday, 18th February 2017, at 7am in the morning to count the various bird species frequenting the mini habitats. The team comprised 12 students and 5 facilitators. The walk was led by Mridul Anand, an avid birder and a student of Class XI. The walk started from the primary wing. The team was full of excitement to see these creatures in their natural habitat but had to remain very calm as silence is the main key to observe the beautiful ones in their natural niche. Children were equipped with cameras and binoculars as they didn’t want to miss a single glimpse of these birds. From the Primary block the team moved to the Senior block and then the team covered the Pre-primary block. By 9 am the team had been able to spot 27 species of birds in the school campus.
Two spotted owlets peeking through metal pipes in a very adorable manner were the highlights of the day. Some of the other species spotted were Red-wattled Lapwing, Eurasian Hoopoe, Rufous Treepie, White Wagtail, Purple Sunbird, Oriental White eye, Shikra, Brahminy Starling, Common Tailorbird and Asian Koel.
The observations led the team to conclude that our campus is suitable as an avian habitat. The checklists can be accessed through the following links:
Visit to ‘Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary’ (11th February, 2017)
Children of Class VI are exploring concepts related to nature, classification of plants and animals in Science. To make the concepts more enriching for the children, a visit to a wildlife sanctuary was planned.
Children visited Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, Asola, New Delhi on 11th February 2017.
Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary lies at the far southern edge of the city of Delhi, at Asola near Tughlaqabad in the Delhi National Capital Territory of India. This protected area contains one of the last surviving remnants of Delhi Ridge hill range and its semi arid forest habitat and its dependent wildlife, the northernmost extension of the Aravalli mountains that begin in the state of Rajasthan.
Heritage Walk to ‘Humayun Tomb’ (31st January 2017)
In continuation of studying Medieval architecture as a part of history curriculum, a heritage walk to Humayun’s Tomb, was planned to make learning more enriching for the students of class VII.

Shikshantar Model United Nations Conference (shik’MUN’16): Winter edition
The seventh shik’MUN- Shikshantar Model United Nations conference, was held on 17th and 18th November 2016. The event marked the step-by-step induction of the VIII grade into MUNs. The conference was for classes VIII, IX and XI, this being the first MUN for the VIII grade students. Three committees were simulated, all chaired by the students of the Class XI.
The General Assembly with nearly 60 members was chaired by Nandini Goel, while Sparsh Sinha and Saumya Arora were the vice-chairs. Sanaya Dutt was the rapporteur in the committee. The agenda of the committee, Suez Canal Crisis, 1956, was, in essence, a culmination of a lot of conflicts in the mid twentieth century. The Security Council was chaired and vice-chaired by Saumya Agrawal and Ritvik Varghese respectively, deliberating on The Korean Peninsular Crisis, 2013. Chaired and vice-chaired by Dway Lunkad and Tejas Vohra respectively, the War Cabinet was a constant crisis committee, discussing Operation Desert Storm. Yash Raj Mehran was the Secretary General of the conference and the overall in charge of all logistical. NiveditaGautam (Head: International Press), Aryaman Parmar (Journalism Head) and Noor Randhawa (Head: Photography) took a lead of the International Press and were responsible, along with a team of photographers, journalists and designers, for publishing the newsletter The Daily Caucus at the end of the each day.

Senior Secondary School programme committed to develop, facilitate and inspire meaningful changes in school education. The purpose of this programme was to help young people gain familiarity with options available for higher education and make informed choices.
Open House for Class VI
Republic Day Celebration
Children of Class VIII (Aqua and Zarya) organized the Republic Day celebrations this year, on 25th Januray 2016. The day commenced hoisting national flag followed by the national anthem. Minoti didi and Sunil bhaiya shared with their views on the significance of celebrating the Republic day. Children of Tarang group presented a beautiful musical piece (Instrumental), titled ‘Blue Water Cascade’ signifying freedom for all and unity in diversity, the two values that forms the foundation of our country.
Children ov Class VIII attended a workshop on the Constitution of India, organized by the organization ‘We The People’. It was a enriching experience to understand the struggle of the constitution makers, the importance of the constitution and the significance of the preamble. They shared their learning and experience with the gathering as part of the Republic Day celebrations and carried out the same workshop with classes VII and VI.
The celebrations culminated with the patriotic song, ‘Vande Matram’ and flying tri-coloured paper planes.

Open House Interaction for Class VIII
The Second Open house for class VIII was held on 18th September 2015. It was co-facilitated by the students of Aqua, Zarya and Tarang.
The theme of the open house was ‘Our lives, Our goals’. This theme was the culmination of a two month long project on goal development that was undertaken with class VIII. Children shared their experience of being a part of the project through poems, write ups and skits. A series of worksheets were designed to help children identify where they are, where they want to be and how they can reach there. The responses to these worksheets were tabulated by children themselves. It was then shared with the parents graphically in the form of a power point presentation.
The second open house served as an important platform to initiate an open conversation on various topics between parents and children
Open House Interaction for Class IX
Together We Can Challenge – 2015
Together We Can Challenge – 2015, was organized by Nimal Bhartia School in association with ‘Delhi by Foot’ on 7th August 2015. The compettition required the participants to design a Walking tour’ between two destinations (of historical, cultural or ecological importance) with a connecting theme, an activity kit, a road map connecting the two destinations as well as a poster promoting the walk and a badge for the walkers. Finally a presentation had to be made on the process the participants undertook to face this challenge headon! The winning teams’s work was to be replicated by Delhi by Foot with a special mention on their website as well.
13 children from Classes IV, VI, VII and VIII participated in the event.The presentation and activity kit dispalyed by our children was well appreciated by the judges as well as the other competitors. Shikshantar bagged the first position for the activity kit. The same would be soon fabricated by Delhi by Foot on the walks latter would organize for school children.
Together We Can- 2015 was a great learning experience for the participants. It not only instilled the importance of sustained team work but also helped the students in challenising their creative energies in productive manner.

Our school was participated in Basketball School District Tournament (Boys U-14 & U-17) at Govt. School Sec – 4 from 6th August 2015 to 9th August 2015
- Under – 14 team won against Sun City World school by 8 – 7.
- Under – 14 team lost against Shree Ram Moshri by 14 – 5.
- Under – 17 won against Bal Bharti Public School, Manesar by 11 – 7.
- Under – 17 lost in quarter final against Gems International School by 13 – 5.
Path Ahead: a panel discussion
24th July 2015
The panel discussion on ‘Higher Education and beyond’ provided an opportunity to our students of Classes IX-XII for interacting with professionals from the fields of science, design and finance.
The panellists shared from their personal and professional experiences regarding the following:
· scope of different courses and career prospects in the fields of science, design and finance
· identifying interests and mapping them with career possibilities
· studying and working abroad versus in India
While recommending openness to new avenues and flexibility in approach, the panellists emphasized upon the quality of engagement in the chosen field to strive for one’s own level of excellence. It came out in the discussion that there are no wrong choices, it is what we make of those choices and also that we get opportunities to make another choice.
The discussion on the requirements for the areas of research, design and finance made it very clear that all disciplines involve innate problem solving, perseverance, analytical thinking, communication skills and self-management.
The students posed questions pertaining to the panellists’ specialisation to get a better understanding of their area of work.
Session by Prof. Bob Frod on “Stem cells and anti- cancer drugs: One protein to rule them all”
Professor Bob Ford, Associate Dean for Internationalization; University of Manchester who specializes in Biochemistry conducted a Master Class for interested students of Classes IX – XII on Monday, 10th August. The topic for the Master Class was ‘Stem cells and anti-cancer drugs: One protein to rule them all?’.
A representative from the University of Manchester briefed the students about the admission process and requirements.
We the children of Tarang group got the opportunity to celebrate one of the popular festivals of India, ‘festival of Ramadaan’ on friday, 17th July 2015. All over the world, millions of hearts mingle with eachother in joy. In this festival, people break their 30 day fast.
We did a collective celebration in 2 slots, 1st slot for children of classes V-VIII and 2nd slot for children of classes IX – XII. Children of Class V were enthusiastically dressed in traditional clothes. Girls were looking pretty in salwar suits or lehengas with their heads covered with dupattas whereas boys were looking smart in kurta pyjama, denims and shirts and had tied handkerchiefs around their head.
When we got to know that we have to celebrate Eid festival in school, the first thing that came to our mind was qawali – ‘Dama dam mast kalandar…’. Deepak bhaiya, Nitesh bhaiya and Tirupati bhaiya helped us prepare the qawali songs like ‘dama dam mast kalandar.., Allahoo allahoo.. and give thanks to Allah’. We took helpof instruments like Guitar, congo, oud, banjo, recorder, tabla and harmonium. All the children from the Classes V – XII enjoyed our songs. We had prepared a powerpoint presentation pertaining to Eid. We shared some lesser known facts about celebration of Eid across various countries, different delicacies savoured during Eid in different countries.
Frank Anthony Inter School Debate
The Preliminary round of Category I (Class XI and XII) of the prestigious Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter School Debate was held in Shikshantar on Wednesday, 15th July, 2015. Five CISCE schools from the zone participated in the event. The Frank Anthony Debate is organized once every year by the Council (CISCE) and Shikshantar hosted the event this year. The debate was in the extempore format. The topic “Today friends have replaced family” was announced at 9:30 am on the same day. The participating speakers were not allowed to use the internet or any electronic gadget for preparation. The highlight of the debate was the confidence and panache with which some of the speakers brought out the finer nuances of the given proposition. The debate was adjudicated by Dr. Madan Gopal, renowned Sufi musician and literati, Dr. Rajiva Verma, ex-Head of the Department of English,University of Delhi and Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, journalist, political commentator, author and a documentary film maker. Shimona Singh and Shivang from Scottish High International School, Gurgaon were adjudged the Best Speaker and the Runner-up respectively and the school was declared the Best Team.
A session with Sohail Hashmi
The fifth shik’MUN- Shikshantar Model United Nations conference, was held on 27th, 28th and 29th April 2015. The event was for classes IX to XII and witnessed particularly enthusiastic participation from the new XI grade. There were three historical committees, chaired by the students of the outgoing batch of XII, especially invited for the event.
The General Assembly, the largest committee in the conference was chaired by Udayan Sarin. Sanchit Rathi was the vice-chair and Yash Singh from Ignis group was the Rapporteur. The committee was set in 1950 and the agenda was Apartheid in South Africa, 1950. Continuous crisis were thrown on the delegates which kept the level of debating high.
The other two committees, Indian Cabinet and Inter-Services Intelligence were smaller and hence debating was more intense. Indian Cabinet discussed Balance of Payments crisis of 1990. The Indian Cabinet was chaired and Vice-chaired by Taesha Aurora and Ameya Purohit respectively. Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was a continuous crisis committee, discussing the Hijacking of IC 814. Anirudh Kedia chaired the committee and Kannav Aurora Vice-chaired it.
The entire experience helped students debate world politics. The International Press team led by Iman Syed (Head- Journalism), Aahanaditya (Head- Photography) and Sanya Sharma (Overall Head) published The Daily Caucus for each day covering the events of the day. Abhay Manu Sawhney from Ignis group, the Secretary General, was the ceremonial spokesperson and the overall in charge of all logistical matters including recruiting the staff and delegation of responsibilities. Students are now raring to go for Inter School MUNs and can’t wait for next shik’MUN scheduled in November 2015.

Vishvas Open House

‘Vishvas Open House’ interaction is a forum where the parents and school team meet twice in a year. The purpose is to strengthen our joint understanding of how children learn and connect to their ‘self’. Over the years, the issues addressed in this session have been widespread ranging from understanding inclusion at home and beyond; sensory integration therapy; options of evaluation board ( NIOS/ CISCE); support facilitation model etc.
The theme of this session’s first ‘Vishvas Open House’ was ‘Development of social skills’. We are all aware that developing an ability of social exchange is an important component of an individual’s education in life. Many key factors such as developmental age, social and cultural context of the child, readiness and cognition play an important role in this. In the case of a child with special needs, there could be an additional delay because of her specific limitations, limited vocabulary and limited abilities to express herself.
Parents and didis were divided in small groups to reflect upon this topic. The groups were given case vignettes from the context of our children. These were influenced by real life situations that the team is aware of either in a child’s stay in school or at home. There was a thoughtful deliberation related to it. Some common points that came up were:
a. Understanding the child and his limitations is important
b. Looking at the situation from multiple perspectives
c. Dialoguing with the child and peers
d. Being considerate of the child and his/her reaction but never over compensating for the special needs
Parents and facilitators felt that the session was meaningful and it provided an insight into the kind of challenges children face in negotiating social exchange. It was also an opportunity for them to reflect on their engagement and interaction with the children. As a culmination they were given a reading material to understand and connect to their child’s world better.

Annual Intra-School Debate [English]
The Literary Committee organised Shikshantar Annual Intra-School Debate for classes IX to XII.
The first round of the debate took place on Tuesday, 21st April, 2015. Thirty two students from classes IX to XII intensely debated on relevant socio-political issues. The students had been divided into four pools and the topics ranged from Capital Punishment to VIP Culture toFeminism. The day saw opinions being challenged and multiple perspectives emerging from the debate. The interjections, raised by fellow speakers and audience alike, were thought-provoking and insightful. The debate was moderated by Shiv Bhatia and Gayathri Venkatraman. Joyeeta Bandhopadhyay Didi and Shalini Mithal Didi judged the debate. Surya Ram Bhardwaj (XI) and Muskaan Sharma (Zephyr) were behind the lens to capture the event.
Of the thirty two who participated in the event in Round I, twelve advanced to the Second Round held on 22nd April, 2015. The second round was extempore and the topic was announced the same morning. Thereby, the participants had approximately two hours to prepare for the event. The proposition was Standardisation of Education is a Futile Pursuit. Shiv Bhatia and Kannav Aurora moderated the debate while the speakers were adjudged by Madhavi Mehra Didi and Nilanjana Mukherjee Didi. Jitwan (Zephyr) and Tanmaey (Zephyr) clicked pictures of the event. The debate saw students confidently expressing their views both For and Against the proposition. Students fiercely challenged and defended standardised testing procedures, boards and syllabi. Interjecting students raised pertinent questions about creativity, individual choice and how context influences the learning of an individual.

The Wild Chase : Class X Outstation Curricular Experience at Camp Kyari, Syat, Corbett, Uttarakhand
1st April to 5th April 2015
On the first day, after settling into their tents, the children were divided into teams. Each team was given a questionnaire, which contained questions to be asked from villagers living in the three villages around the camp. The interaction enabled the children to understand how different their lives were from living in a city and the hardships they have to go through to earn their livelihood.
On the second day, the children went on the 7km Khichdi stream jungle trail in the Sitabani forest. They saw many birds such as kingfishers, purple sunbird, eagle, hawk, vultures and many more. Here were multitudes of insects such as asian bugs, dragonflies etc. They saw many signs of large animals such as trees eaten by elephants, elephant foot marks, tiger pugmarks and tiger claw marks. They crossed the river a total of 32 times, and swam in it where the water was deep. The children also saw various reptiles such as a monitor lizard and a python. Langurs and monkeys were a common sight. They saw webs made by tunnel spiders.
A few children went on an extended 2km Great Hornbill trek. They saw the rare Great Hornbill and a wild elephant, wild pigs, barking deer, spotted deer, flameback woodpecker, wagtail etc.
On the third day, half the group went for mountain cycling and canal surfing. For the surfing activity they had to lie down in a fast flowing canal and go with its flow.
The other half attended a photography workshop. Then they made a rope bridge by themselves and crossed the river using it. In the afternoon this group got ready for the night out. They trekked up to a hill with all the equipment needed for camping. Once they reached their destination, they collected wood and water, set up tents and made food.
The group at the base camp engaged in theatre. They created stories involving animal characters and presented their plays in front of children from the nearby villages. They also went for a night trek.
On the last day of the trip, rain tried to play spoil sport but it cleared up around noon. The groups interchanged the set of activities. All other activities remaining the same, in place of the night out this group went for an extended night trek carrying their dinner which they had in the forest.

Sri Lanka Visit
An event organised by Goethe Institute turned out to be a landmark achievement for the German learners of Shikshantar. Children from grade VIII- XI from nations like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka participated in the contest.
The project ‘Wasserwerke- a poster on Water Conservation’ made by our students, Aaryan Bammi, Vedansh Tijoriya and Mansheel Chahal was awarded the first prize. The winning teams from all participating countries attended the German Youth Camp at Kandy, Sri Lanka, from 02.01.15 to 09.01.15.
The exchange programme expanded the children’s horizons both intellectually and individually. Besides learning German with their peers from other countries, the three children also explored Sri Lanka. They visited Sri Dalada Maligawa temple, Elephant orphanage Pinnawalla, botanical garden, Sigiriya Rock and a tea factory.
The accompanying facilitator (Neha Gupta) was invited by Goethe Institute to address and facilitate German lessons in the German Youth Camp at Kandy, Sri Lanka. Not only did the camp provide a unique learning opportunity to the students and teachers, but also enthused the team to excel in future events.
New academic session begins
The new academic session with children began on the 25th of March, 2015. With a sense of having grown up, smiles on their faces and the sheer excitement of moving to new groups, children are back in school. On the way stopping to have a look at the turtle in the pond, wondering where the fish were hiding, comparing the heights of Marshmellow, although it has been only two weeks that they had been away.
Though it seemed seamless, didis had spent a lot of time preparing children for this day and for a sensitive facilitation of the entire process. This was done through group themes such as new group elements, change, growing up, moving ahead, our new group space etc.
The movement stated with the children going to their previous groups wishing in their hearts that their didis or at least one of them would move with them. Apprehensive and eager to know who would be the new didis. ‘Vanar Years’ moved to ‘Finding Feet’, ’Finding feet’ to ‘Climbing Feet’, ‘Climbing Feet’ to ‘Finding Grounds’, ‘Finding Grounds’ to ‘Finding Self, Growing Wings’
All children were accompanied by their didis to their new group spaces. They lit a diya in the new group to embark on a journey of learning and growing.

A session with Sanjeev Sanyal
Senior school students in Shikshantar had a stimulating discussion with Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal, a bestselling author, the writer of “The Indian Renaissance: India’s rise after a thousand years of decline” and “Land of the Seven Rivers: A brief history of India’s geography.” The session focussed on a unique and refreshing perspective on Indian history. Mr. Sanyal traced the evolution of our civilization since the time of the Neanderthal Man till the present time, in a nutshell. He also talked about the way cities evolve and how we see history-in-the-making, all around us.
The session was thought-provoking as was evident from the eagerness with which the students asked him questions. Some of them could get a copy of his book signed by him; while most left with several absorbing questions in their minds.
Board Exams with Euro International & Lord Jesus Public School
We had invited Luca Bertelli who plays a musical instrument called ‘Hang’. He was accompanied by his friend Abhinar Deodhar who also played this instrument along with ‘Didgeridoo’ from Australia and ‘Chung’ from Pakistan. This visit not only involved interaction with children but orientation about the instruments as well.
The Children of Tarang [VIII] hosted Vasant Panchami celebration on 30th January. The decoration for the festival was done keeping in mind the theme of the festival i.e. Books, Colors and musical instruments. The program started with the lighting of Diya and Aarti by Sunil Bhaiya and the Coordinators. This was followed by Shloka recitation. Keya from Ether [Class VI] sang Saraswati Vandana and Nandini from Zarya [Class VIII] rendered a beautiful Kathak presentation. The culmination of the program was done by the song ‘Vasant Aiyori’ by both students and facilitators.
Good Luck Party
In keeping with the Shikshantar tradition, a Good Luck Party was organised for Class X students on 28th January. It was attended by the students & staff of Class X along with Minoti didi and Sunil bhaiya. It was a musical affair which was started by Rakesh bhaiya on saxophone followed by ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ by Ruchika didi and ‘Choti si Asha’ by all the didis and bhaiyas. The high point of the event was the presentation of the memento by the children, which was their palm prints along with carefully selected inspiring quotes for each of them by didis.
Republic Day Celebration 2014-15
The Class VI [Space & Himmel] hosted this years Republic Day Celebration, which was on the theme of ‘Hopes and aspirations of people of newly independent India’. It represented the impatience and anticipation of Indian People to be ruled by Indian laws. During the course of the event the children had the privilege of hearing to the recording of the last Governor-General of India, C. Rajagopalachari
Christmas Celebration 2014
Christmas, was celebrated in the middle and senior school with much enthusiasm and gaiety on Christmas Eve. Children of Cosmos (Class VI) and Ether (Class VI) group performed two skits showcasing the story of “The man behind Santa Claus: Saint Nicholas” and “The history behind the origin of the Christmas tree”. These plays were highly appreciated and applauded by the audience.
Post which all the staff & students got together to sing Christmas Carols to spread joy and happiness reflecting the festive spirit braving the fog and cold weather.
Young people today face an endless array of choices, both in higher education and in careers. At Shikshantar, we believe, when guided thoughtfully, our youth is capable of making informed and discerning choices. We take pride in helping our senior students explore all possibilities, look within and without, think and analyse and maneuver the direction of their lives. This is done by organising carefully planned reflection exercises, panel discussions and university presentations as a part of our annual programme called The Path Ahead. The aim of the event is to help students gain familiarity with the options for higher education, determine the connect between their interests and aptitudes and match interests with career choices.

Path Ahead: a panel discussion

A panel discussion on ‘Exploring possibilities for higher education‘ was organised for students of Classes IX to XII around questions articulated by our students:
- about scope of different courses and career prospects
- about reputation of departments and colleges
- identifying interests and career possibilities
- about study abroad versus study in India
The discussion provided an opportunity for students to interact with professionals from the field of education.
Path Ahead: University Representation
19th September 2014
The second session of Path Ahead 2014 was organised around the theme of ‘Exploring possibilities of Higher Education in US’. Students of Classes IX-XII and interested parents attended the session in which Admission counsellors from the University of Virginia, The Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison gave presentations about the courses offered by their respective universities.
These presentations were followed by a Session on ‘Education in US’ by Zafeena Suresh, Senior Education USA Advisor, United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF).

हिन्दी वाद विवाद में कक्षा 9वीं व 10वीं के छात्रो ने उत्साहपूर्ण ढंग से भाग लिया | पक्ष व विपक्ष के छात्रो द्वारा दी गई विचारो की परस्तुति अर्थपूर्ण व स्टीक थी, जो किए गये अनुसनधान तथा स्टीक परिणामो पर आधारित थी|
पक्ष व विपक्ष के छात्रो के द्वारा तर्कपूर्ण प्रश्न किए गये, जिनके उत्तर संतोषजनक ढंग से दिए गये| श्रोता बने छात्र-छात्राओं ने भी जिज्ञासानुसार प्रश्न पूछे तथा भाग लेने वाले छात्रो का उत्साहबर्द्धन किया| निर्णायक गणो की प्रतिपुष्टि के साथ वाद विवाद को संपन्न किया गया|
The curricular experiences of the year find their expression in the HamaraManch- an annual event which showcases group presentations through dance, drama and music. Between the initial stages of conceptualization to the final day of the presentation, there are countless deliberations, improvisations, rehearsals, and feedback sessions, with students closely involved at each step. Each and every child participates and contributes towards the presentation that its class will put up. It is full of diverse presentations, chosen by the children of each group.
Sports Day in Shikshantar is a celebration of the spirit of sports. It is a day when the Shikshantar back-lawn is splattered with splotches of excited children in their sports gear. Students showcase their skills collectively in marching, gymnastics, football, cycling, athletics, yoga and aerobics. It is also a day when the sportsperson in each parent is stirred as parents partake in the celebration.
MUN provides students a platform to discuss intricate political issues as highly learned, unbiased diplomats. shik’MUN, the Shikshantar MUN, is organised twice a year in order to provide this experience to our students. Besides the Shikshantar MUN, our students also participate in Inter-School MUNs throughout the year.
An Annual Art Portfolio Exposition is organised to provide a platform for art students enrolled for ICSE and ISC examinations to showcase their work for peers and parents. For the younger students, it is a source of inspiration and serves as an introduction to the ICSE art syllabus. For parents, it is an opportunity to view and appreciate the kind of work that students do in school and are required to do as per the syllabus of ICSE and ISC examinations.
Throughout the year, the school calendar is abuzz with thoughtfully planned literary, cultural and sports events. This includes debates (in English and Hindi), festival celebrations, quizzes, musical concerts, dance performances and sports events. Each of these events is carefully thought out, meticulously planned and methodically executed by teachers and students together. The objective is to provide our students an atmosphere that is rich and provides students ample opportunities to perform and learn.
