'How to create peace within my mind?’ – Interactive session by Venerable Jamyang with children of Class III and IV.
“How do we feel when we connect with inner light?”
“What is peace and when do we feel peace withing us?”
The interactive session of Venerable Jamyang with children of Classes III & IV on 17th of November 2022 helped children in envisaging ‘inner light’ and ‘peace’ as inner states of mind – a mental tranquility that spreads outwards to our body or in through our actions. Venerable helped children understand how being peaceful is like living in friendship with oneself and with every creature. If we are peaceful only then we can spread peace. Inner peace projects itself from ‘ME’ to ‘WE’- towards the family, friends and further extends to community around through our kindness and compassion.
She also guided all of us about the process of choosing happiness that is peaceful and happiness that is without peace. Through her interaction she highlighted the need to stay connected with inner self also. Venerable further beautifully explained that we have all types of feelings, sometimes these can be pleasurable or sometimes there can be displeasure too. What matters the most is how we respond to them.
Few anecdotes of children were
“Thinking about the nicer things that happen, reflecting on them brings back our light within.”
“Peaceful happiness throws unwanted things from our mind. Somethings pleasure happiness makes us do incorrect things.”
“Peace and happiness are like bread and butter. When toasted it is more complete.”
“What is that disconnects me from inner light inside is when I am doing something not okay and when somebody does the same with me. Its like water on fire.”
Venerable encouraged children to think what can they say to themselves when they feel hurt or upset? How can they help themselves by not getting upset when they don’t like something? Children themselves thoughtfully suggested ways in which they can keep their inner light glowing and be in peace.
The session was followed by children’s open ended questions related to the life of a nun, how to avoid distractions while meditating, the role of meditation to bring peace.
“I am not my anger. Anger is in my mind. Anger is not my mind itself” she shared this thought before closing the session with Om Mane Padme Om.
