History - Excavation - Class IV
The children of Class IV explored the theme of ancient artefacts and their excavation by archaeologists. In the immersive experience, the children first created clay figures and pottery. They reproduced objects they used regularly as well as what they come across in daily life.
The children were given tools to excavate their own “artefacts” from pits dug up in the vegetable garden. They picked at the ground with little trowels and upon finding an object, they carefully swept the soil aside to extract it. The children then used brushes and picks to clean the surface of dirt.
After cleaning them, the children discussed with each other what the artefacts could be as well as what information and clues they might provide. Finally, they preserved their found artefacts in pouches and took them home for their excavation boxes.
This classroom experience around the ‘History theme’ led them to understanding and appreciating the art of excavation along with the importance of preserving artefacts from earlier times.
