Shik’MUN 2024: Monsoon Edition

The Monsoon Edition of the Shikshantar Model United Nations conference, Shik’MUN 2024 took place on 24th and 25th of July, 2024 for the students of Classes IX to XII. The Executive Board and the Organising Committee comprised students of Class XII. Priyaan Singh Vardhan as Secretary General, Sara Pant as Director General and Gaurika Mediratta as Head of Logistics oversaw all the proceedings and organised the event.

The UN General Assembly had ‘Deliberation on journalistic immunity and access in conflict zones and military-controlled regions." as its agenda. This committee was chaired by Samaira Singh Roy with Rishabh Aggarwal as the Vice-Chairperson, and Akshat Kumar and Vikshaa Nagpal as the Rapporteur. The sessions consisted of intense discussions and the Head of Logistics, Gaurika Mediratta, participated as Ukraine to raise the level of the debate.

The UN Security Council had “Deliberation on the recent military actions and territorial claims in the South China Sea region” as its agenda this time. Chaired by Anoushka Parmar, with Jaahnavi Sehgal as the Vice-Chairperson, and Amaya Gupta as Rapporteur in the Committee.

The UNHRC had “Deliberation on the establishment of equal rights for sexual minorities” as its Agenda, it was chaired by Ruhin Gulati, Samara Rudra as its Vice-Chairperson and Nikhil Kaimal as the Rapporteur.

The Lok Sabha with the agenda of “Implications of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 on the Right to Privacy.” With the freeze data: 3rd August 2023, was chaired by Mannat Singh as the Speaker, Aanya Sharma as the Deputy Speaker and Advait Bajoria as the scribe. The committee was vociferous, comprising loud and lively debate on the agenda.

Four other unconventional committees were: White House Situation Room which had Iranian Hostage Crisis as its agenda with the freeze Date of November 5th 1979, Futuristic Crisis Committee deliberating on APOPHIS 2028 and Interpol discussing “Combating Islamic extremism with special emphasis on domestic terrorist acts committed within the EU from 2004-2015.”, lastly there was UEFA with “Addressing the Impact and Viability of the European Super League Proposal” as its agenda. The Executive Board of the Committees comprised students of Class XII, namely, Natasha Lakaraju, Kshitij Sharma, Atharv Mehta, Sophia Phaugat, Ekagr Rao, Yayin Sinha, Aksh Chaudhary, Vairaj Singh, Soeham Jha and Angad Singh.

Along with the above, the conference had one of the largest International Press team ever in a Shik’MUN conference. The IP Team was headed by Ksshika Sethia and Anushka Tomar with Aadya Rastogi, Harnoor Kaur, Anika Rawat, Nassia Popli and Harpuneet Singh as Heads of Photography, Journalism, Creative Journalism and Caricatures respectively. Myra Talwar led the Design Team. The IP Team published the proceedings of the two days in the newsletter: The Daily Caucus: Day One, The Daily Caucus: Day Two and The Unmoderated Caucus.
